“This is not your grandmother’s bingo,” said Linda Zweig of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which debuts its own bingo tonight. “The days of playing in a church and putting x’s on a card are gone.” Except the modern version of the game is festive, social and even fashionable. That’s right, the old-fashioned game of chance, played largely in churches and American Legion halls, is making a comeback. The hippest form of gambling has nothing to do with a deck of cards and everything to do with numbers and letters that spell out B-I-N-G-O.
